Creative Project Reflection

This project took on a number of pieces of revised content, but the most crucial additions were an expansion of the process by which the world changed during years prior to the present day, a greater inclusion of the "Harriett" character so as to build her out as a full-fledged character rather than simply the main character's object of affection, and finally a major  revision of the ending of the story which 1) actually follows Godzilla through his confrontation with Mothra and 2) changes this confrontation from being too "monster movie-like" to being contained to a high-stakes verbal back-and-forth inside of a suburban home's kitchen. I am most proud of this project for the semester. I did excellent work here, in my opinion. At the very least, I feel like I gave it excellent effort. I think, of all of the writing I have done this semester, this is the piece that I can safely let rest as it is. Regarding the assessment goals that I had set up for myself, I...

Narrative Nonfiction Reflection

In self-assessment of my CTE paper and the process of writing it, I would give myself a B. I am proud of the paper and I think it turned out well enough, but I could have done better. I think it is a proficient piece of writing with minimal technical problems or slip-ups, but doesn't stand out as a highly-creative or exceptional use of the art of writing, so I give myself a B in that category. In the Narrative Structure category, I think I did A work, and that I was able to write an exploration of what is known about CTE and who it has impacted in a way that flows really well and is engaging to read, so I give myself an A for that. Finally, in the category of research, I think I have several really good resources, but I could have been more thorough and had a much more broad perspective due to that, so I'll take a B on Sourcing. Technical Skill: B Narrative Structure: A Sourcing: B Overall: B I really enjoyed working on this, but I almost wish it had been the entire focus of t...

Alex's Writing Advice

Hi there, future writer! If you are reading this, it is too late. You can't undo being a writer, you can only take a break from it for whatever amount of time you need. Welcome to the club, sorry there aren't refreshments, only blogs and articles. My name is Alex, and here are my pieces of advice for you regarding writing in English 458. 1. Just Do The Writing You may not want to sit down and get 250 words of journaling out. You should do it anyway. It will carry some benefit for you, I'm quite sure. It may help you to organize your thoughts. Maybe you'll find inspiration in your own questions. Heck, there's at least going to be the positive effect that you'll become a faster typist. Your fingers will thank you. Do the journals, they're good for you. 2. Your Draft is Shitty, But That's OK. Write the draft to the best of your ability and submit it for workshopping. Don't come to class when your workshop comes up and cringe because your classmates are...

Reflecting on Writing as a Student in ENGL 458

My name is Alex. I feel that having practiced writing during the last few months that I have gotten better not only at writing and composing, but that the most important development in my writing journey is my ability to take criticism and direction from others who are present to give helpful input. I still don't know how I would handle a critic who is simply being critical to be mean, but that's not really what we modeled during this semester. As an overall student, I should be stronger. I have a very bad habit of not meeting deadlines, and I most definitely need to get better about that aspect of my work. I felt coming into this class that my creative work was strong coming in, and I am glad that I had this exercise to sharpen the skills I already had there. Where I feel stronger by a wide margin is in informative writing and communicating nonfiction content. That being said, I would really love a break from researching peer-reviewed articles and scouring the internet for acc...

Making Contact

Making Contact: Truths About Concussions and CTE   STAPLES I came to with the youth pastor holding me down by the shoulders. My best friend’s dad Pat was applying pressure to the back of my head and telling me to stay down. A handful of my friends were circled around me and staring. Frankly, they all looked scared. I just wanted to stand up and get a drink of water from the fountain, but Pat showed me what he’d been holding against my head – a very bloody washcloth. I realized I must be pretty hurt if that was my own blood plus the youth pastor had me pinned and was keeping me from moving. When my mom got there to haul me to the emergency room, she was crying. Turns out I had a big gash in the back of my head and needed 8 staples to close it up. Worst of all, I wasn’t allowed to sleep that night because the doctor noticed my pupils were dilated which meant I had a bad concussion.             Concussions are not t...

Godzilla, King of Cardboard

Alex Howe “Godzilla, King of Cardboard”               As the dawn broke upon the suburban sprawl where he now resides, Godzilla begrudgingly awoke at the beckoning of the novelty alarm clock his kids got him for Father’s Day last year. He had a few minutes to reflect on these mornings, overcast skies outside the window and likely a little chilly that day, but nothing his thickly scaled skin couldn’t handle. He did have to make sure his daughter Brayleigh didn’t take her flip-flops to school again, though. She loved those things and insisted on wearing them at all times, even if her toes turned blue in the snow. His son Kreston was in the middle of a growth spurt and probably would be a bit of a bear when Godzilla had to wake him up, so Godzilla decided to make a real breakfast with eggs and bacon and toast to help Kreston out and give him some protein to start the day. Maybe the boy’s mood would improve by the time school...
